From a strong proponent of Silento to a Jack Ü affiliate, Skrillex had a lot to share about his interests, work, and opinions in his most recent interview with leading New York radio station AMP 92.3. Citing Justin Bieber as “the most talented, gifted kid I’ve ever seen” and highlighting his additional skills in skateboarding, ping pong and pool, Sonny has historically spoken positively of his experience and relationship with the Canadian singer-songwriter.
The LA-born producer had even more to say about his longtime relationship with deadmau5 who, in April, revealed that he had met Sonny years ago at a HARD Events party. It was there that he handed Joel a USB drive containing “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” – and the rest is history.
“I’ll always have love for Joel because he put me on at an early time, but he’s an asshole. And everyone knows that, and he knows that. And that’s kinda his thing. I mean, the one thing that is unfortunate about it is that he has a record label. And when you have a record label, you gotta be a leader. And he has people that are like signed to him. And I couldn’t imagine being a leader, you know, going out in the public image being such a negative attitude…I don’t take it personally because I’m secure with myself and what I do, I love what I do. But I almost feel bad that that’s his one way of getting attention rather than going into music and curating. I think his attitude’s changed over the last couple years. I personally have become less connected to his music because his personality is almost overshadowing that, when he is such an incredible artist.
This is not the first time Skrillex has spoken openly about deadmau5; last year, he revealed to Howard Stern that Joel is “kind of in his own lane” and that he “never felt the need to be competitive with him.”
